During this time of quarantine, I, like many other people, wanted to find a way to do something good for the community and to support others. I especially wanted to express my gratitude towards all the essential workers who are keeping us safe. I started to look around my house for materials that I could use to make something and I found a stack of colored paper. That’s when the idea of making origami stars came to me. I remember seeing a jar with beautiful tiny stars packed inside and thought that this would send an important message of hope and thanks. I started making the stars - each one taking about a minute to create. It takes 15-20 stars to fill a jar, so I made over 500 stars. For our next batch, I will be reaching out to kids all over the country to help make stars so we can give others a way to express their thanks and spread more gratitude! I plan to begin with students in my own school and then, through this website, I hope to expand this project to kids around the country. My goal with this project is to support the workers who are putting their lives on the line to save the lives of others. I think those working to heal the sick in this time deserve special recognition for their tireless work. For this reason, each tiny jar has a small card with a message of thanks (in English and Spanish) and is decorated with festive ribbon. I hope that this tiny gesture helps remind our essential workers that we all wish them good health and courage in their work!
